Carefree Cruising was established in 2002 and we are proud to say that Carefree Cruising is the oldest and longest established of the major shared ownership schemes. Artie & Ruth Chalmers (our Directors) were boaters for many years before they set up Carefree Cruising. Today, their love of boating continues as proud owners of a share in one of our syndicates. Their experience as Boaters, Customers and Managers of our scheme has enabled us to develop a market leading management service that is second to none.
We operate a totally transparent, open, honest and professional service to care for you and your investment and are happy to build a bespoke package for you and your syndicate.
All of the current boats in the fleet have a similar structure with regards to their management services, focusing on the following main areas:
Administration management: Christina Farrall is our Syndicate Manager and it is her and her team that are your first point of contact for owners. The admin team shoulder the considerable administrative burden of dealing with everything for the syndicates from moorings, insurance and licencing through to syndicate correspondence and organising the allocation structure. Carefree Cruising own allocation system is a rotational picking order, which ensures that allocations are completed in a structured and fair manner.
It is also the team that is responsible for advertising and selling any shares that are or may become available within a syndicate.
Maintenance: Paul Wheeler is our Technical Manager and he oversees all of the maintenance work required on the boats. With the help of his team of experienced engineers and joiners they look after everything from weekly turnarounds and repairs to annual winter maintenance. We maintain a “work log” for each syndicate that includes details of all work required on the boat, when the requirement was reported, when the work was completed and how much it cost. This “work log” is posted into the syndicate area of our web based communication and information system for all owners to see and comment on if appropriate.
We directly manage our main boat bases at Middlewich Canal Centre in Cheshire, Aston Marina in Staffordshire and Welton Haven Marina in Warwickshire. This ensures a consistent quality of service for our syndicates and share owners. An experienced and knowledgeable local manager is present on turnaround days and Carefree Cruising staff undertakes all routine maintenance and repairs. We also operate a 24 hour, 365 day a year support service, giving you the peace of mind that in the unlikely event of you encountering a problem whilst cruising, help will be at hand, promptly and efficiently.
Finance: Artie Chalmers, our Director, is a qualified chartered accountant and prides himself on ensuring that syndicates are provided with accurate, concise and transparent information. Syndicate accounts are prepared each month, showing full details of all income and expenditure, and these are posted into the syndicate area of our web based forum for all owners to see. Twice per year (“Part Year” for the AGM and “Full Year” when the financial year has ended) full syndicate accounts, including a commentary are prepared and sent to all share owners. These are discussed and approved at the syndicate Annual General Meeting. Any share owner can query transactions, ask for an explanation of anything within these accounts or request to inspect all the invoices, bank statements and documents relating to their syndicate at any time.
Each syndicate has its own bank account, through which all payments for services or work done on behalf of the syndicate are made. This is a “Designated Client Account”, which means that the Bank accepts that the money in the account belongs to the share owners and not Carefree Cruising. Any share owner may request a copy of the bank statement for their account at any time. Your money is therefore 100% safe.
AGM: An Annual General Meeting is held once per year in a central location. Share owners have the opportunity to discuss with Carefree Cruising staff in person anything relating to the running of their syndicate and boat. This syndicate budget for the following year is discussed and approved along with the management fee and the charge rate for repairs and servicing to be made by Carefree Cruising.
We understand that each syndicate is different, with unique syndicate agreements, and we are therefore very happy to work with syndicates to put together a bespoke package which would contain some or all of the above services.
